84th Annual PMA Convention
Posted Feb 2,2008

Maybe it’s just imbedded in my DNA but I can’t help being a gadget geek, fortunately that passion melds well with my job description here at National Geographic. It also affords me opportunities to visit some of the largest photography trade shows, like the 84th annual Photo Marketing Association (PMA) convention being held at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

There are literally thousands of cameras and photo doodads set out for hands-on display and scads of eager manufacture’s representatives on call to explain and demonstrate the newest widgets for 2008. It’s like visiting the world’s largest candy store except you get to satisfy your sweet tooth with photo gear!

PMA represents a $90 billion industry with over 600 exhibitors. The show covers the equivalent of 10 football fields, with 3.5 miles of aisles that will just wear your feet to the bone.

At the Nikon booth photographer Dave Black (above) speaks to an enthralled audience on how he uses Nikon’s D3 to capture amazing sports images. A fascinating view of the Nikon D3 literally cut in half to reveal its inner working.

Though only a mock-up is on display, Sony introduced their flagship full frame 24.6 MP digital SLR which will be out later in 2008.

For the finale, who can resist taking home a souvenir from the Samsung booth – Las Vegas style?

I have always been a tech geek and have been searching for a cool way to display all my digital photos that are now currently stuck on my computer. I know there are digital picture frames that you can use all year, but, I was looking for a way to display them during the holidays, especially Christmas. I could only find one kind of digital photo ornament on the market and they only came in 3 colors and were round, kind of boring. Then the other day I came across a brand new digital photo ornament that is not even available yet, but the company is taking pre-orders and will start shipping in June '08. The digital photo ornaments are amazing and come in all shapes and sizes and they have free shipping. Every ornament also comes with a free digital picture frame to use year round. You just take out the LCD from the back of the ornament and insert into the frame, pretty cool idea! Go check them out www.thedigitalgiftshop.com

I would love to sneak into this show. How much stuff on digital frames? No slow down for gadgets I would think, people gotta have em.
