How Green Were the Guests at the White House Correspondents Dinner?
Posted May 11,2009
Macy-455 Washington was awash in celebrities last weekend, as famous folk from politics and show business came to the White House Correspondents Dinner to pay tribute to ... well, honestly, we're not sure what they paid tribute to.

But we at National Geographic wanted to know one thing: How green were they? We asked every star we met, "Did you do anything green this weekend?" A few of the leading lights did share their thoughts.

William H. Macy (above) makes sure to turn off lights. He added that this month's mammoth cover frightened his kids and might have made them cry. We think he was kidding. (His wife, Felicity Huffman, standing behind him, was unavailable for comment.)

Henry Louis Gates Jr.: The Harvard professor of African and African-American studies didn't do anything green but he promised to.

Washington, D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty drove the Smart car that he acquired last year.

Hardball TV talking head Chris Matthews dodged the question and said that he thinks we should do a story on Mozambique. And his wife drives a Smart car.

Madeleine Albright went on a National Geographic Expeditions trip recently and also went to Syria and studied cedar trees.

Sadly, access to other stars was limited.

Jonathan Rhys Meyers (of The Tudors) was too busy being attacked by a group of screaming teenage girls.

Barbara Walters looked busy on her iPhone, and we didn't want to disturb her.

And we tried to get comedian and dinner headliner Wanda Sykes as we were walking behind her for the red carpet entrance ... but we were knocked to the side by the flood of paparazzi.
